Is Data Gateway must in Redshift connectivity?

Hi,

I am looking to setup a seamless connection between Power BI and Redshift.

Below is my configuration -

- Redshift in VPC

- Power BI Desktop in on premise machine.

I have whitelisted on premise machine that has access to VPC through direct connect.

With above config able to connect Redshift database from Power BI desktop.

Now with the architecure that was posted for Redshift to Power BI integration -

https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/big-data/integrate-power-bi-with-amazon-redshift-for-insights-and-analytics/

is it must to have data gateway?

If yes why? Does is it make data accessible at all times even when the power BI report is published?

Thanks.

  • Hi Anonymous ,

Since Redshift is a cloud service, there is usually no need to use an On-Prem Data Gateway.

However, in your scenario, Redshift is in VPC ( Virtual Private Cloud ). Based on the official document, one gateway is needed.

Question: Do I need a gateway for cloud data sources, such as Azure SQL Database?
Answer: No, services can generally connect to cloud data sources without a gateway. However, you might need a data gateway if your data sources are behind a firewall, require a VPN, or are on virtual networks.

    Best regards
