Invalid Token eror on refreshing data (Power BI & Excel)
Hi,
For a while I have been experience the very annoying "Invalid Token" error when trying to retrieve data from the M365 environment (formally Office 365).
Anything I do within the browser works fine when it comes to Power BI, but the error occurs when using desktop applications.
I use my Microsoft Account, and the Windows Authentication to login without avail. Restarting the laptop does refresh the token, but I can't keep restarting the laptop every hour or two.
Microsoft Account login brings us this:-
... and Windows login brings us this:-
Clearing the browser cache and history doesn't do any to resolve this.
It seems like if something is happening after the authentication has been completed but the application doesn't get the message that login has been completed with a token.
Any thoughts on a solution would be very helpful.

Hello Mathew_Vaughan
Power BI and Excel desktop apps are showing "Invalid Token" or "Couldn't authenticate" errors when connecting to Microsoft 365 data, while browser access continues to work normally. Restarting the device temporarily resolves the issue by refreshing the token, but the error returns after a short period.
Clearing local token cache and re-authenticating in Power BI helps in some cases. Running the apps as administrator or installing the latest WebView2 runtime may also resolve the issue. If the organization uses conditional access or MFA, authentication flow interruptions may be the cause and should be reviewed by IT. A reliable workaround is to copy the query's M code and paste it into a new blank query instead of using the duplicate option.
The issue appears to have started with the June 2025 Power BI Desktop update, so checking community forums or logging a support ticket may be necessary if it continues.
If this solution helps, please accept it and give a kudos (Like), it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
The issue started before the June 2025 update. and does seem to be doing something post MFA.
I tried copying M queries but the issue still returned. I even put them in a dataflow, and still happens with the desktop app. I have referred the issue to our IT department and waiting back on them. I think the issue has got them stumped.
Next step would be to post a ticket with microsoft, if our IT failed to solve it.

Hi Mathew_Vaughan
Just checking in to see if there's been any update from your IT department regarding the issue. If the problem persists, it might be worth considering raising a support ticket with Microsoft for further investigation.
