Incremental refresh when a word changes

I'm wanting to use incremental refresh on when a word changes and not based on dates.

I have a column that contains: Open, New, Awaiting Info, Resolved, Closed.  When a record changes to Closed, I no longer want to refresh that record.

All the resources I've found had to due with dates and not when a word changes.  Anyone know of a good resource that dives into this?
