Import and DIrectQuery modes cannot be combined in a single report

I'm using Power BI Desktop from January 2022 (version 2.100.1381.0 64-bit). I have seen many references to composite model capabilities but I cannot figure out how to create one. As an example, I can start by importing an XLSX file. If I then try to get data from an Oracle database, import is my only option. I have the same issue if I first create the direct query connection to the Oracle database and then try to import an XLSX. Power BI will tell me I must switch to import mode. I've watched a few videos where people setup composite models and they seem to follow the same steps but receive a different prompt that allows them to create a composite model. I was under the impression that composite models were available in the version of Power BI Desktop that I am using, but maybe I am wrong or maybe it's something my organization has disabled. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

    gvanderbilt I am using import and direct query in one file for quite some time.  The limitation is only with Live mode. It happens only when you want to have a transformation that is not supported in direct query.

      Thanks for the confirmation! I don't think I'm using Live mode but I'll read a little more into it. I also haven't made any transformations yet. In my example, I've only imported a 3 column xlsx and then gone to "get data" to connect to an Oracle database. Import is the only option available.

        I have the same issue. Just made a simple DirecQuery connection to a sql Server. Then when I try to import an excel It gives me this image.

        I use PBI Desktop version 2.121.1642.0 64-bit (septembrie 2023).

    Hi gvanderbilt ,

     

    Have you still have this error? The power bi desktop now supports composite models, so theoretically there should no error that prevents the use of composite models.
