Since you are using a matrix visual and there is a data at the lowest hierachy you cannot hide the empty rows as it is not actually empyle and has data at the loewst grain of data. Probably you need to re-think the hierarchy structure that you are using.

@Fei_Fei

Use a measure based filter to remove the sample level empty value.

However, you screenshot looks like different levels. e.g. if level 2 is empty , level 3 is under level 2 and has value. How can you remove level2 and keep level3? In this case, I don't think we can do that, you need to modify your data strcture and re-setup the hierachies.

@Fei_Fei, Hi, Change Layout to 'Tabular', Switch on 'Repeat row headers'.

MasonMA_1-1777298553991.png

Then for your Cluster Column, uncheck 'Show items with no data'

Thanks MasonMA. I tried but the empty columns are still being displayed

Hi @Fei_Fei,

Thannks for reacing fabric communtiy, will happy to assist. You are facing issues while do not showing the blank values in your visuals. Here are some of the ways to do the same.

Scenario A: Using the Visual-Level Filter (Best for "Empty" Strings)
If those rows look empty but aren't disappearing, it's often because they contain a "null" value or an empty text string.
  1. Select the Matrix: Click once on your table visual.
  2. Open the Filters Pane: Look for the "Filters on this visual" section.
  3. Identify the Field: Find the specific field that is nested under "Cluster" (the one causing the blanks).
  4. Apply Advanced Filter:
    • Click the down arrow on that field.
    • Change "Basic filtering" to Advanced filtering.
    • Under "Show items when the value:", select is not blank.
    • Alternative: If "is not blank" doesn't work, select does not start with and type a single space in the box.
  5. Click Apply filter.

Scenario B: The "Measure", If measure filed having an issue
If the rows are empty because they have no "Sum of..." values, you can force the visual to hide them based on the calculation.
  1. Go to the Filters Pane.
  2. Find your Measure: Drag the field you are using in "Values" (e.g., Sum of Amount) into the Filters on this visual section.
  3. Set to "Is Not Blank" or use the DAX function to remove empty()/Blank() rows.
    • Set the filter to is not blank OR is greater than 0.
    • Click Apply filter.
    • This tells Power BI: "If there is no number here, don't even show the row header."

Please consider this as an accepted soltuoin if it helps, kudos are also appriciated.

Hi Lodha - I tried scanerio A but it did not work. probably because the data were extracted from a microsoft soft survey and the questions contains many optional fields depending on the answer where user will be redirected to another section should it not be applicable

Hi @Fei_Fei,

Turn off blank rows from format settings (or look for "Items with no Data" and turn it off)
