How to set by default Matrix visual to Expand All levels
Hi Team,
Is there a way to keep Matrix visual by default expanded to all levels (Even after a new row/column is added to Matrix).
Our requirement is to show all the levels of matrix without manually selecting Expand -> All option.
As of now when a new row/column is added to matrix visual data is shwoing in collpased mode and we need to manually expand.
Any work around/property can be set in Matrix theme to set expand all levels by default?

By default, when a hierarchy is first added into the matrix, it won't be expand all levels. You need to click the button to expand.
For the unsupported feature, you may submit an idea and vote for it: Ideas (powerbi.com)

I believe this will resolve it: go to the Matrix settings, Row Headers > Options, turn off Stepped Layout.
I don't see this as an option though? I'm using Power BI version 2.143.878.0 64-bit (May, 2025)
If you choose "Tabular" in the Format Visual part of the Visualization pane while on the Matrix visual within "Layout and style presets" then back in the Matrix visual right click on each column with expansion capability and select "Expand to next level" for each, it gets the same effect since the Stepped Layout option appears to not be available anymore.

Anonymous Thanks for sharing your query.
Try saving the PBIX file in the expanded form of your matrix visual and then publish the report. It should stay expanded if you have new data added to the matrix.

Hello, I don't think this works completely.
I tried what you suggest and it worked at first but Power BI autoamtically switch back to default hierachy if you go to a different page and then go back.
It showed things expanding all down to next level the first time I open and load that page in the published site (supposed that's the page 1 of the Power BI). However, if I finish looking at page 1 and go to page 2 and then go back, the page 1 will be reset to the default hierachy where nothing was expanded. This created some confusion to viewers and I had to stop doing expand down all level.

Can you help me too, my doubt is also same, but in my case I made the row as a button liek from the parameter field okay.. so i have 4 button and it work properly ike if i select one button matrix will show that row wise value, now the question is if i want to select more than one button then the matrix should show exanpded with tabular form this is how i want if i select 2 button matrix shoudl show 2 row properly, but instead its showing me the compacted way like i need to manually drill down to see that 2nd row as per the selection of button.
I hope you get my question, pls let me knwo how can this be resolved?- ghoshabhijeet

Even if I save Matrix in expanded form and when I add a new filed in Rows section the newly added filed is collapsed.
This is happening both in PowerBI Desktop and Online Service, any other solution please.

Anonymous I have tried the solution I have stated in my earlier and it's working at my end. I am using the latest version of Power BI desktop. So, hopefully it should work at your end too. Please check.
This doesn't work. It works only when stable
I'm rather late to this party, so this may go unseen. The following will achieve what you need:
- In the matrix format options:
- Go to "Layout and style presets"
- Make sure you have "Tabular" layout chosen
- Expand all in the visual
- In the matrix format options:
- Go to "Row Headers"
- Turn the "+/- icons" option to OFF
