How to know a dataset's type and path without the permission?

I am quite new to Power BI. Recently I need to update a Power BI report, when I open the pbix file I got  "Looks like we're unable to access the dataset. Please contact the owner of the dataset."

I understand it is a live connection to the dataset and I need to request for permission. My question is how can I find the data type (SQL, SharePoint or Datalake?) and the path (the server name, URL, etc). I need these information so that I can request for permission.

Thanks for advising.

Hi @Azure_newbie ,

As far as I know, you can find the data source in Data source setting.

File > Option and settings > Data source settings

Above is my data source, a Power BI Dataset named "Rank in Direct Query to sort". Click on Change Source to see determind the workspace. You need to make sure you account has the access to this dataset or you could only know the dataset name.

Then you can sign in your Power BI account in Power BI Service and look for this Dataset in Workspace.

@Azure_newbie , That is Power BI Dataset, so all the information will there in power bi dataset. even if you get access as dataset you will not be able to see that

Thanks for you reply.

I managed to get sign-in to the admin account and open the report. The "Data view" is missing I think it is correct since it is a direcy query report.

I want to update the dataset (add column and update query). But I cannot find a way to do so. Could you please point me the steps? Sorry for the newbie question.

I found this discussion (Solved: Editing Datasets With Direct Query - Microsoft Fabric Community) it seems edit datasets is impossible? It seems strange to me. I cannot update the dataset?
