How to edit bpip project file created from semantic model

Hello,

I have remote semantic model created on DirectLake over OneLake.

I exported it into bpip project, edited files but question is how to import it using Power BI?
It is possible?

Best,
Jacek

Hi @jaryszek ,

Direct lake models can only be updated on the service or trough XMLA endpoint in Power BI Desktop and external tools like SSMS or Tabular editor.

When you refer that you have exported a PBIP project what do you mean? Generally a PBIP format can be uploaded to the service trough Power BI Desktop.

Hi @jaryszek,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

I understand you exported your Direct Lake semantic model into a PBIP project, made edits, and want to import those changes back into Power BI.

PBIP projects do not support a direct “import back” process. Instead, open your .pbip in Power BI Desktop it automatically connects to the remote semantic model. Any supported edits you make and save in Desktop will sync to your model in the Fabric workspace.

If you have manually edited files (e.g., via VS Code), make sure only supported metadata (like measures or relationships) was changed, as invalid edits may prevent the project from opening. Also, Fabric workspaces retain version history, so if something goes wrong with your edits, you can roll back to a previous version safely.

Also please refer these official docs:
1. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/projects/projects-dataset
2. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/fundamentals/direct-lake-power-bi-desktop
3. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/projects/projects-overview

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any doubts regarding this. We will be happy to help.

Thank you for using the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.
