How to create a chatbot-style Q&A that automatically generates visuals in Power BI?
Hi everyone,
I want to build a feature in Power BI where a user can type a question in a chatbot-like interface, and it will automatically create and show a relevant visual based on that question.
I know Power BI has the Q&A visual and Q&A setup for datasets, but training and maintaining that model is quite complex for me. So I’m looking for an easier or alternative approach.
Could you please suggest if there’s any:
Custom visual or AppSource extension that enables chatbot-style interactions,
Or any way to connect Power BI with a chatbot (like Power Virtual Agents, Copilot, or custom LLM) to dynamically generate visuals,
Or any other simpler workaround to achieve this kind of Q&A-to-visual experience?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi Mahendra_k,
You can achieve it by using Copilot in Power BI service.
Copilot must be enabled for your tenant and workspace (Fabric/Premium capacity).
Open a report → click Copilot → type a prompt like “Create a line chart of weekly active users by product over the last 12 months.” Copilot drafts the visual/page, which you can tweak as usual.
🌟 I hope this solution helps you unlock your Power BI potential! If you found it helpful, click 'Mark as Solution' to guide others toward the answers they need.

Build a chatbot using Power Virtual Agents or a custom bot that takes user questions in natural language. The bot sends the query to a backend (via Power Automate or Azure Function) that uses the Power BI REST API to run DAX/SQL queries or generate a report/bookmark link. The chatbot then returns a relevant visual or Power BI embed URL to the user. This gives full control over logic and visuals while staying within Microsoft’s ecosystem and governance.
