How to configure auto refresh in Desktop Version?

Hello,

I am a new Power BI user and want to know if there's a way to schedule auto refresh in the Power BI desktop version?

Also, Is there a way to create extracts for big datasets in Power BI like Tableau? I tried using Incremental Refresh feature of power BI by publishing data to service but Power BI has limit of file size not exceeding 1024MB where as my file size is about 4GB. Is there any other alternative way to do incremental refresh?

Thanks.

  • altopene , Limit depend on version. For Pro, I think it is 10 GB. Then you have a premium user or premium workspace. Inremental is one way, Direct query is another way of do want to load data to power BI

I tried from Pro. it is 1024 MB only. Direct Query would not work in my case since it is a huge dataset and I want to either set up incremental refresh effectively or create an extract so that I dont have to refresh the same dataset multiple time.

        Hello altopene

        You can try different Cases!

        1. In the case of huge Datasets, we can use a direct query to make our file size small so that we dont exceed the limit of 1024 MB

        2. You can eliminate some columns or table which do you don't need.

        3. You can use dataflows, not sure if it might help.

And we cannot extract huge datasets in Power BI as we have certain limitation on rows.

        Regards,

    Hi, altopene

PowerBI desktop doesn't support  auto refresh, you have to publish it to powerbi service .You can perform a one-time, manual refresh in Power BI Desktop by selecting Refresh on the Home ribbon. When you select Refresh here, the data in the file’s model is refreshed with updated data from the original data source.

Large datasets can be resource-intensive. You should have at least a P1 or an A4 SKU for any datasets larger than 1 GB.For PBIX file whose size is larger than 1 GB and smaller than 10 GB, it can only be published to Premium workspaces. For details, you can refer to this document.

If your data model is larger than the data model that Power BI Service can accommodate, in addition to optimizing reports (reducing the size of pbix), you can also try SQL DirectQuery or SSAS Live connet respectively.
