How to change text to date format

Hi guys,

Power BI neewbie here ... and I am in need of some help. I have a dataset with a "month" column which has short month names (jan, feb, mar, apr, may etc...) ONLY as values. These are in Text format and I need to change them to date format. 

What is the best way to get this done? I can't seem to just change the type to date because it will give me errors...

Do you also have a column that tells what year you are in ?

No unfortunately not.. I literally only have this column to work with...

can you guess the year ?

I've created a calculated column which has a year hard coded, it combines the year with the text month name and transforms them into a date

Thx Ken,

This solution indeed works, however I can't guess the year... This dataset runs across two year periods... so hardcoding the year isn't an option.

I am however going to keep this in mind and see if I can tweak it to work 🙂
