How to Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway?

Hello!

I create a Power BI dashboard with the SAP HANA Database. The gateway is personal gateway running on my personal computer (CN01-GX5YDY3). When my computer is offline such as weekend, the dashboard does not refresh every 1 hour. The reason is that the personal gateway is off.

I want to enable the on-premises gateway, but under the Settings, under the Gateway and cloud connections, the Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway button is unenabled. Moreover, there is no Cloud connections.

I guess when this dashboard can use on-premises gateway, it can refresh automatically even if my personal gateway is off on weekend.

Do you think so? May I have your help to use the on-premises gateway for this dashboard? Thank you in advance.

Yes, @LoganDuan1987  you are correct: when you use an On-premises or VNet data gateway (not the personal gateway), your Power BI dashboard can refresh even if your personal computer is off.

Steps to Use On-premises or VNet Gateway

• Install the On-premises data gateway on a dedicated server or always-on computer (not your personal PC).
• Add your SAP HANA data source in the Gateway settings in Power BI Service.
• In Power BI Service, go to your dataset settings > Gateway and cloud connections.
• Select the On-premises/VNet Gateway (not personal). If you cannot select it:
• Make sure your dataset matches the connection details registered in the gateway.
• Ensure you have permission to use the gateway (ask your admin).
• Update your dataset credentials to use the gateway.

This will let your dashboard refresh automatically, even when your personal computer is off

SAP HANA is a cloud data source.  What makes you use a gateway? Gateways are only required for on-premise data sources.

Hi @LoganDuan1987 ,

There are two types of gateways in Power BI personal and standard, the main difference is that the enterprise allows for multi-user use and  the connections that one allows over the other one.

In this case install the standar mode of the gateway but be aware that you need to do it in a computer that is running, so in this case this should be done in a server machine and not on a local computer.

The rest of the setup is very similar.
