How do I switch "Live Connection Power BI dataset" (Shared Datasets)?

I have my report4.pbix built on my desktop then published online (as report4) with a live connection to my published on Power BI dataset (shared dataset) model4.

I've now updated my model and published that online as a Power BI dataset (model5).

How do I switch report4.pbix so it now uses Power BI dataset model5 as it's data source?

HA! Hey @handwepg , I figured it out in trying to show this to @amitchandak

Turns out the Transform Data button is disabled, but the dropdown is not. You can select another dataset with it. I am not sure if this is new. I am pretty sure I looked for this about 4 months ago on another project, but may have missed it. Anyway, this should work pretty easily. It is just hidden because the Transform Data button looks like it is disabled. It is only partially disabled.

@amitchandak - Power query isn't available for live dataset connections. Unfortuntely there is no Change Data Source button in that case.

@edhans , Thanks for pointing out. There is something related discussed here for a direct query, not for live. I have not tested the same.

Direct query is still based on Power Query and you can easily change the data sources. Connecting to  live data set (Power BI data set, SSAS, etc) is, as far as I know, unchangable once connected.

To test this @amitchandak

  1. publish a report to your workspace.
  2. Create a new PBIX file. Get Data, Power BI Dataset.
  3. Select a report from your workspace. It will have your email, not "My Workspace"
  4. Now, change the connection.....

@edhans , Maybe enabled along with the data model view, not sure as I have not tested in the past.

I do not believe this is possible.

You'd need to create a new PBIX file, point to the new data set, then copy your visuals from your old to your new PBIX file. You can go to each page and press CTRL-A, CTRL-C, then in the new file, CTRL-V. Then you have to redo any bookmarks, filters, and other tweaks.

If someone does know how, I'd love to hear it as I ran into this issue a few months ago.
