How can I switch the connection setting from Import to DirectQuery

I have an existing Power BI Desktop file with a query that pulls data from a SQL Server using the 'Import' option. How can I switch it to use the 'DirectQuery' option? So far it looks like my only option is to create a new pbix file and specify 'DirectQuery' for the initial query and recreate my reports.

If I create a new file and query the server using the 'DirectQuery' option, I do see an option on the lower right corner that says "DirectQuery: Enabled (Click to Change)". If I click on it, it brings up the "Connection Settings" dialogue and I'm able to change it to "Import". After that, the option is no longer available on the lower right corner and I have no way to swithch back to DirectQuery.

Thanks!

Hi,

Due to the current restrictions on DirectQuery (lack support for measures, calculations, BiDirection relationships, etc), models that are created in Import mode cannot be switched into DirectQuery mode. So for now, your only option is to create the model from scratch and always stay in DirectQuery mode.

YES, you now cango to the relationship view and select the table and change the storage mode from DQ to Import.

Thank you all for confirming this behavior. The reports will be recreated using the DirectQuery connection setting.

@pycon9

Sadly, there is no good answer to your question.

I explained the issues in this post:
