How Do I Add a Row to my Source Data

My Power BI desktop is based on an excel spreadsheet. I need to add a new column to the spreadsheet so that it appears in the Power BI desktop, but when I try to do this I get an error message saying the column isn't recognised.

I've tried replacing the source code altogether with a new version of the excel spreadsheet, but that means having to change everything else I've already built in Power BI desktop so I'm reluctant to do that.

Is there a straightforward way to add the new excel column and data to the Power BI report?

Thank you

  • Hi Lucy01 - Yes, you can add a new column from your Excel spreadsheet to your Power BI report without needing to replace the entire source or rebuild everything in Power BI.

First, make sure the new column is properly added in the Excel file and saved.Go to Power BI Desktop: Open your report where the Excel file is the source.Refresh the data: In Power BI Desktop, go to the Home tab and click Refresh. This will reload the data and should recognize any new columns added to the Excel file.Ensure that your Excel file is formatted as a table if it isn’t already.Check the data model and relationships after adding the new column.

This way, you don’t need to rebuild the entire report, and the new column should be incorporated into your existing data model seamlessly.

Go to the data table and add a new row at the bottom of the table (or wherever necessary). If your Excel data is in a table format, simply go to the last row and start typing the new data. Excel will automatically add the row to the table.

In Power BI Desktop, go to the Home tab and click Refresh. This will reload your data and should pick up the new row you added in Excel.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Lucy01,

Did you tried to add column using power query?

Column not recognised error come from excel, Power bi or power query?

Give us more details to guide in straight way, if possible you can share no sensitive screens shot of your model.
