Help with custom regions, please?

I can see the map works fine out of the box when using "Countries", because it already knows about countries.

Now, I would like to use these Maps for custom "Regions"

I have a table telling me which "region" a country belongs to.

How can I get the map visual to highlight by "Region" rather than Country?
