Grouped items change background color

When I group several items together, none of which have a visible background, the backgroud for the group turns white and I can't change it. Does anyone know why this happens, or how I can fix it?

    Select the group and ensure it has the Background turned off.

     

    Also ensure that the rest of the visuals, such as the text box, have turned off their background or their transparency set to 100%
