Hey guys,
I've been trying and trying and trying to find a way to format the value section of a dropdown slicer (the displayed selected value + box) that is independent from how the fold out list of options look like. So far no luck and I also haven't been able to find anything useful online except several year old posts, and a lot has hapened since then so thought I'd give it a go here.
I have a hierarchy in a dropdown slicer with long text string and it looks ridicoulus whenever a users gets past level 1 in the hierarchy (out of 6 levels total). The "Value (column) + Value (Column) ....." is visually ugly and also ends up hiding the most important selection, the final one.
I simply can't believe there isn't a way to do this, so I've come here looking for tips.
Preferably I'd like to be able to alter the displayed selected value, if that cannot be done I'd like to have a different background for the displayed selected value box vs the drop down list
It doesn't make any sense to me if they're both just considered "Value" and has to be formatted the same.
I've tried weird hacks where I overlay a box with a measure displaying the value I want and I can make that look good in desktop but as soon as it's rendered in the service, it no longer alligns and the colors doesn't exactly match (even though it's literally the same hex). It also leads to the clickable area being very small which decreases useability and if you misclick and hit the slicer it pops out over the box i've put over
i could really use some tips before i spend my weekend making a new hierarchy slicer myself

@BIanon to avoid the slicer to pop-up, make sure to turn on the maintain layer

Thank you. Great tip, that'll definitely solve one aspect of my issues here though this still feels hacky and I would be willing to bet money on it bugging out in many different scenarios (with overlaying a box on top of the slicer).
I cannot put into words how extremely disappointed I am with the formatting options for something as basic as a hierarchical drop down slicer - I'm very much leaning towards just making my own.
There's a whole list of things I can't seem to format or where the behaviour is just, in my opinion, very silly.
Fun little qoute from ChatGPT when I asked about how to do this:
"Ugh, yeah, the standard Power BI slicers are a joke when it comes to formatting. The hierarchy dropdown especially feels like it was designed by someone who never actually tried using it in a real report"
Do you know if the code for the core visuals are open sourced somewhere ?
I am totally with you, sometime things are so small but there is no solution. I would recommend to provide your feedback to core visual team. I don't have a link but if you google it you will find the link. Good luck!
