Filter vs Slicer question

Hi

I have created a table in Power BI from 2 fields (SalesPerson and Amount).

When I click on the Table visual. I see the 2 fields in the Filter pane. When I go to Filter pane --> Filter on this visual --> Saleserson >  I see option Advnaced, Basic and Top-N.

But when I go to Filter pane-->Filter on this visual--> Amount > I do not see Top-N option.

Does that mean Top-N option only available for Text fields?

Also why the Filter Pane? is there any difference between filter and Slicer? Can I use silcer (which is easier) without need to use Filter?

Thank you very much.

  • Hi, lastnn30

According to my research, different types of fields get different types of filters.
TOPN filters work for text/date/boolean type fields. Fields of numeric type do not get TOPN filters.

The slicer and the filter pane have different features and you can use either one or a combination of both depending on your needs.
If you want to learn more about their differences you can read the following article for more information.
What Are the Differences Between a Power BI Slicer and a Filter?

    Hope this helps.
