File is corrupted and can't be open

Switching between different versions of Power BI Desktop

To investigate what exactly went wrong, the file needs to be opened at the code or structural level — but this is a complex process that often requires dedicated tools, and in many cases, it might not be possible to fully recover the file.

Here are a few things you can try:

Check for AutoRecovery versions
Power BI sometimes creates automatic recovery files with a .pbix.autorecovery extension. You can check here:

Try reverting to an older version of Power BI Desktop
If the corruption happened after a version update, try opening the file with an earlier version of Power BI Desktop (if you know which one was used to create it).

If the report was already published to the Power BI Service, you might be able to download the latest version:

Go to the workspace

Click the “Download .pbix” option (available only if it was published from Power BI Desktop and download was not disabled)

Fallback to previous backup or version control
If you manually keep backups or use source control like OneDrive, SharePoint, or Git — try restoring an older working version.
