Field Order in PBI Desktop

Hi All

I have two queries which I have merged together in PBI Desktop. As such, I have all the columns from query 1 on the left hand side of the query editor and three columns I have selected from query  2 on the right side of the query editor (expected). When I move the three columns from query 2 to the left hand side of the query editor, (where I want them to be), all good. However, when I then close and apply the query and end up in the Data View, the new positions of the fields as per the query editor is not reflected in the Data View (unexpected). Does anyone know why this is happening ? Am I missing something here ?

In addition, does anyone know why it is not possible to either move columns around or best-fit columns in the Data View ? That would solve this issue.

Paul

Once a query has been loaded once, any added columns will be loaded to the right of everything that was previously loaded regardless of where it is in the query. Even to the point where if you add a custom column in the table view using DAX, newly queried columns will be added to the right of that. I am fairly certain there is no way to change the order of columns in the table view.

You can disable load on a query, apply, then re-enable load. The correct order will then carry through to the table view. This will however destroy any custom DAX columns in that table if you have any. But it's not too difficult to recreate them if you stash their code somewhere and copy and paste back in.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions - I appreciate you getting back to me.

Given what I'm trying to do, I can't see the point in being able to move the columns around in the query editor, thereby putting them in the order I want, if that does not then flow through to the Data View. In addition, I'm astounded that I can't move columns around in the Data View and also that columns cannot be best-fitted in the Data View. As far as I'm concerned, both of these things are basic functionality that should be available in the Data View in PBI Desktop.

I hope someone from the PBI Desktop development team reads this post and can appeciate where I'm coming from. I will suggest these two things as enhancements anyway. If you agree with me vote for it ! Imagine if you couldn't best-fit or move columns around in Excel !!

    Hi Paul,

We cant move or reorder the column in Dataview and the newly added Dax Column should add at last.

In Editor window only we can do reorder.

So i suggest u raise this idea in Power BI Idea i will support you cheers !!!

      Hi Baskar

That is unfortunately indeed the situation. To me, it makes no sense to be able to move columns around in the query editor and to not be able to do that in the Data View as well. I have already posted this as a new Power BI Desktop idea.

Your support for this idea and your votes for this idea are appreciated.

      Cheers !

      Paul
