Fail to connect to SAP business warehouse server

Hi PBI Gurus,

I got the error message (....SAP Business Warehouse: Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "Microsoft.Mashup.SapBwProvider.Resources.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "Microsoft.Mashup.SapBwProvider" at compile time...) while trying to connect to my SAP BW server after entering server , system number and Client ID.  I'm stuck with this for long and new to PBI as well.

Is there anyone could give me some clues about how this happens and how to sovle the issue ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had to do the following step by step to resolve this error.

Short answer:
- Install the SAP connector and enable the "Install assemblies to GAC" option during installation;
- Clear credentials SAP BW;

Long answer:
Take a look at this article. It goes into more detail.

After investigating the problem, I found that the connecton works when I reconnect the server after clearing the existing permission in the data source settings (Under File -> Options and settings -> Data source setting)

It looks like you're encountering an error related to connecting Microsoft Power BI (PBI) to SAP Business Warehouse (BW). The error message suggests that there's an issue with a resource file related to the SAP BW provider for Power BI.

Here are some steps and suggestions to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Update Power BI and SAP BW Connector: Ensure that you are using the latest version of Power BI Desktop and that your SAP BW connector is up-to-date. Sometimes, updating the software can resolve compatibility or bug-related issues.

  2. Install SAP GUI: Ensure that the SAP GUI (Graphical User Interface) is installed on the machine where you are trying to connect. The SAP GUI provides essential libraries and components that might be needed for the connection.

  3. Check .NET Framework: Ensure that you have the correct version of the .NET Framework installed. Sometimes, compatibility issues arise due to outdated or incompatible versions of the .NET Framework.

  4. Reinstall SAP BW Connector: Consider reinstalling or repairing the SAP BW connector in Power BI. Sometimes, a corrupted installation can lead to such errors.

  5. Culture Settings: The error message indicates something related to culture or localization settings. Ensure that the regional settings on your machine are correctly configured. Sometimes, mismatched or incompatible culture settings can lead to such errors.

  6. Check Assembly References: If you have custom configurations or if you have done any development work, ensure that all assembly references are correctly set up. The error message suggests a potential issue with a specific assembly related to the SAP BW provider.

  7. Consult Documentation or Support: Since you mentioned being new to PBI, it might be beneficial to consult the official documentation related to connecting SAP BW with Power BI. Additionally, consider reaching out to Microsoft support or SAP support for specialized assistance.

  8. Logs and Error Details: Always check detailed logs or error messages available in Power BI or SAP BW for more specific information. Detailed logs can provide more insights into what might be causing the issue.

  9. Test in Different Environment: If possible, try connecting to a different SAP BW environment or server to see if the issue persists. This can help identify if the problem is specific to the current environment or more general.

By systematically checking these areas and steps, you might be able to identify the root cause of the issue and resolve it. If the problem persists, consider seeking assistance from a specialized IT support team or consulting experts familiar with both SAP BW and Power BI integration.

Hi abc123,

Thank you for your quick response.

I really checked whether the version of all related softwares you mentioned is up-to-date or not, and

    installed the latest .NET Framework.

But the issue remains the same.

Later I found I could bypass the error message when I switched to other BW server (QAS/PRD) to connect them.

I guess that the issue maybe casued by the related parameter settings of the server(DEV) in question.

So , I'm looking into what may cause this happen.

Thank you for your kind help again.

You're welcome, and I appreciate the update on your progress. If you were able to connect to other BW servers (QAS/PRD) without encountering the same issue, it does suggest that the problem might be specific to the settings or configuration of the DEV server.

Here are a few additional steps you can take to investigate and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Compare Server Configurations: Compare the configuration settings between the DEV server and the other servers (QAS/PRD) where you can connect successfully. Pay attention to any differences in authentication methods, connection protocols, or other server-specific settings.

  2. Check User Permissions: Ensure that your user account has the necessary permissions and authorizations on the DEV server. Sometimes, issues with connecting to a specific server can be related to user permissions.

  3. Server Logs: Check the logs on the SAP BW server (DEV) for any error messages or warnings related to the connection attempt. The server logs might provide additional details about what is going wrong.

  4. Firewall and Network Settings: Verify that there are no firewall or network restrictions preventing the connection to the DEV server. Ensure that the necessary ports are open and accessible.

  5. Update SAP BW Components: Check if there are any updates or patches available for the SAP BW components on the DEV server. Updating these components might address compatibility issues.

  6. Consult SAP Support: If the issue persists, it might be beneficial to reach out to SAP support. They can provide specific guidance based on the SAP BW server logs and configuration.

  7. Check SAP Notes: Search the SAP support portal for relevant SAP Notes related to the error message you encountered. SAP Notes often contain information about known issues and solutions.

  8. Review SAP BW Configuration: Examine the SAP BW configuration settings on the DEV server. This includes checking the RFC (Remote Function Call) destinations and ensuring that they are correctly configured.

By systematically investigating these aspects, you may uncover the specific configuration or setting that is causing the issue with connecting to the DEV server. If you find any discrepancies or issues, you can address them to ensure a successful connection. If the problem persists, consulting with SAP support is a recommended next step.
