Error when using Power BI dataset as datasource - "Cannot load model"

Hello,

We have one specific user who gets error as "Cannot load model. We couldn't connect to your model in the Power BI Service. The dataset may have been deleted, renamed or moved or it is possible that you don't have permission to access it"

He is a PRO user. He is logged on using same id in PBI Desktop and Service. He is using June version of PBI Desktop.

In PBI Desktop, when he does "Get data> Power BI datasets", he can see the list of datasets. But when he chooses a dataset he gets error as above.

He has "Build" access to this dataset. He CAN create report in Service based on this dataset, but cannot access it via PBI Desktop.

There is another dataset for which he is the owner, and he cannot use it as a datasource either in PBI Desktop.

This problem occurs only for this user. We have other users who have "BUILD" role to a dataset, and they can use such dataset as source in PBI desktop.

Please advise some solution. Thanks!

I raised a MS ticket.

It turned out that user being on Windows 7 OS is the issue.

MS recommended to upgrade to Windows 10 OS and that should solve the issue it seems.

We are experiencing the same issue, the user is the owner and adm of the datasets,

the datasets are in the PBIService working properly and the reports as well.

.- The issue appears in PBI Desktop,. either for Reports pointing to PBI service loaded Datasets or new Data trying to get data from PBI datasets appears the same error "cant find, locate or you do not have permission to access to the dataset",

We need to solve it, pls, any suggestion is more than wellcome

Dears,

Yes, the problem disappears when connecting the dataset in another computer with Windows10.

I wonder why Microsoft forces to this updagrade and handicap the continuity of works for users willing or needing to have other OS in servers,.,,

thanks for your support.

Thanks for the update @meenakp

Hi @meenakp ,

Seems like cannot determine the specific reason because it only happens on a sepicifc user. Perhaps you can change to another network environment or re-install power bi desktop to check this user again.

@meenakp it is strange, can you check if he is part of workspace, although he has build permission it should work but trying to see what else it could be?

@parry2k, He is not a member of the workspace in the 1st scenario, but he has build access.

[Other user with same access can access the dataset in PBI desktop.]

In the second scenario, he is a member of that workspace and he publishes reports, but he cannot sill access its 'dataset' in PBI Desktop.

Its indeed strange!
