Error fetching data for this visual caused by date slicer

Hi there,

A few weeks ago I started getting the following error in PowerBI Desktop when I was opening some existing reports I have saved to my local machine or ones that I have downloaded from my PowerBI Server.

When I open a report for the first time and after a few seconds of loading, I am getting a terminal popup flash on the screen for a second and then disappear. A few seconds later, the visual that the date slicer controls will change to 'Error fetching data for this visual'. I've been able to isolate the issue down to it being my date range slicers that appear throughout my reports, however there is no useful information when I click the 'See details' prompt.

As far as I'm aware, there have been no changes to my machine. I am on the latest version of PowerBI (and have tried uninsalling and reinstalling a number of times). I've also got 2 colleagues who are able to open these reports without any issues.

I should also mention that I am running PowerBI Desktop on a Mac and through the latest version of Parallels. This has been working seamlessly for over 12 months and as a troubleshooting option I have installed a new Window VM and a fresh copy of PowerBI desktop, but still the same error.

Any ideas on why this has only recently started happening (within the last month), and how I can resolve it?

Correction:  this issue is still NOT fixed in the June 2025 release.   This issue seems to be isolated to ARM ? e.g. Windows Surface Pro

It's not true, I just installed the version and it hasn't been resolved.

You're right, i just double checked and it still popped up an issue

The exact same thing has happened to me since March, in the following updates IT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. So some WINDOWS/POWERBI update is causing the failure. I also have Paralles on a MacBook M3, and before it worked perfectly with the same file. I've restarted, reinstalled POWER BI DESKTOP, and nothing. If the same thing happens to you and you have found the solution, let it indicate. In addition, the following error is seen in the Event Viewer.

The description of event ID 22 is not found in the MSOLAP$AnalysisServicesWorkspace_7b9b4950-034c-4a9b-953e-9c7365e01299 source. The component that causes this event is not installed on the local computer, or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on your local computer.

Thanks Alban, can you please keep us posted if there are any updates?

Hello News from support :

I am writing to follow up on the issue we previously discussed. We have escalated the case to our PG team for further investigation. After a thorough review, the PG team has provided an update regarding the matter.

Unfortunately, at this time, ARM-based X64 machines are not supported. This has been confirmed by the PG team.

We totally understand your situation and for now we do not have an ETA for this feature improvement. We will request you to kindly post your Idea in our  Ideas forum where our Product Group(PG) keeps a track of all the requests made by a customer.

I encountered the same issue with the Power BI Desktop May 2025 version while running it on a Mac using Parallels. However, I discovered that the problem occurs when using measures that contain IF or SWITCH statements.

As a workaround, I was able to rewrite these measures using a DIVIDE(expression, if valid then 1 else 0) strategy. I hope this helps you overcome the issue and assists @v-venuppu @Microsoft in gaining a better understanding of its root cause.

BTW: I still find it surprising that the issue does not occur on an Intel-based machine.

Best regards,

I am getting the same error for the version after Mar-2025, Apr-25 & May-25. I am using Windows VM Machine 64-Bit Operating System, x64 based processor.

Hi @v-venuppu @Microsoft since the issue is also occuring on Microsoft/Windows machines could you resolve this issue ASAP?

Hi @v-venuppu, since the issue is also occuring on Microsoft machines (see the replies in this thread), I assume that Microsoft will be looking into this to get this resolved ASAP?

Hello I had exactly the same problem with my new suface laptop 5 with the lastest version of Power BI Desktop (May 2025). And It works with my old pc (surface laptop3) with the same version of Power BI Desktop.

I tried to download the file from the service and it's the same problem.

Exact same issue on the May 2025 version.  I am using Microsoft Surface Pro 11, 64bit.  Issue seems to be with Date Slicer but only when slicer setting is set to Between or After.

I've posted on the Parallels forum as well. Hopefully Microsoft and Parallels can work together to get this resolved: https://forum.parallels.com/threads/power-bi-desktop-raises-an-error-for-power-bi-desktop-versions-a...
