Embeded PowerBI in PowerPoint not updating correctly

I have a report published and then embeded into some PowerPoint slides as live data. This worked correctly in the first place but then I start making changed in the report by adding some other filters and measures on a visual, adding a slider etc. This all updated correctly in the web service but not in the PowerPoint. The strange thing is that it does show the new slicer I added, but the filters on the visual are not working. Once I noticed this I rolled back to the older version of the report but still the filters that are on the visual are not working correctly anymore. My question is, is this known behaviour? And if this is something I can fix or will changed to visuals/datamodel always 'break' and already embed PowerPoint?

Hi,@Roym .
Thank you for your replay .
Unfortunately, if changes are made to the report in the service, it needs to be re-embedded in the power point!
I talked to my team members about this result.
We believe that if you embed a report from a service into a power point, the embedded report is equivalent to an up-to-date copy of the report, and it can be interacted with dynamically as an interactive report, unlike a static PDF embedded directly into a power point.
Therefore, if you make changes to the report on the service, you need to re-embedded in Power Point, (after my test, it seems that the embedded report can not be updated by refreshing the report in Power Point).
The above is my understanding.I hope it can help you!
Looking forward to your reply.

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Hi,@Roym .Hello,@rajendraongole1 ,thanks for your concern about this issue.
Your answer is excellent!
And I would like to share some additional solutions below.

According to your description, you are experiencing an issue where the power bi embedded in power point is not updating correctly.
Here are my suggestions to help you.

1. Check the embedded URL.
Please make sure that the URL you are using for embedding is up to date and has no spelling errors.
2. Refresh the embedded report in power point.
Click on the refresh button in power point, this refresh operation does not perform a refresh of the report itself (to get the latest data from the data source), but instead updates the report page or visual object with the latest data from the Power BI service.
3. If you still make changes to the report after embedding: add some measure/silcer, please recopy the modified and updated URL.
Here are some tests I have done:

I reworked the report in the Power BI Servcie: again added a silcer

Re-present the modified and saved report in Power Point again.

Normal display

If you could provide that more detailed information about your operation, it would be helpful in solving the problem for you.

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

On the url, does this one change every time I publish the report with changes? As maybe that could be the issue then as I use the url that is given when doing export -> PowerPoint -> Live Data in PowerBI web service. Also you copied the Sharepoint URL how can I use that one in Powerpoint? when trying to add that url PowerPoint mentions that the url is not correct for a PowerBI report

Hello, thank you for your reply.

I apologize for misleading you by giving you the wrong solution due to my negligence!

In fact, as you said, you should choose PowerPoint>Embed live data.

Below is a test of the difference between the two URLs after I made the changes to the report on the service:

vjtianmsft_0-1716869403708.png

The URL before modification:
https://app.powerbi.com/groups/e4938c84-fd80-455c-b915-6c83cd51aafc/reports/828f6a59-b30e-438b-bb53-...

The modified URL:
https://app.powerbi.com/groups/e4938c84-fd80-455c-b915-6c83cd51aafc/reports/828f6a59-b30e-438b-bb53-...

Before and after modifying the service, the URL didn't change.

But I tested and found some details: after modifying the report on the service, I deleted a slicer in the report, and then revisited the power point (clicked login to refresh in the power point) but the deleted slicer was still displayed and still worked in the embedded report in the power point. The slicer still shows up and still works, I deleted the entire embedded report in the power point and re-added the embedded report based on the previous URL, and it shows up in the updated state (with one slicer missing).

So I suggest that if you make any changes to the service, you remove the original embedded report from the power point and re-embed a new one based on the URL to keep the report up-to-date in the power point.

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Thanks, this is indeed what I also found out that re-adding the url to PowerPoint works, but this is still an issue for us as we thought that using live data means that the PowerPoint would always reflect the new situation. Is there not another way to achieve this? Or otherwise if an issue or something can be created for this?

Okay clear unfortunate that there is no option to refresh also if the report itself changes, not only the data.

Hi @Roym -After the new changes added in Power BI with filters and adding visuals , hope you republished it  and exported the report in ppt embedded in Power BI Live mode?

Please check it and let know

Rajendra

Yes that's indeed what I have done. So we exported the report with Live data to PowerPoint, which worked perfectly. Then I made changes in PowerBI Desktop -> Published to the web where it worked correct as well, but when opening that original powerpoint and refreshing the data it's not working correct anymore.
