Edit table option is disabled while in editing mode

I have copy the semantic model using Semantic Link Lab code(Migrate/Copy Semantic Model Across Workspaces Using Semantic Link Labs). Previously, the "Edit Table" option was enabled on the service, but now it appears disabled. Could you please let me know if there has been any recent update in Semantic Link Lab, or how I can resolve this issue?

    Hi SakshiBansal11

Thank you for reaching out on the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

The Edit Table option is disabled because the semantic model copied using Semantic Link Labs did not create a full, independent model. Instead, it generated a linked semantic model in your target workspace. Linked datasets in Power BI/Fabric are read-only, which allows reporting but restricts changes such as editing tables, relationships, or the model structure. This is why the Edit Table feature is unavailable. To confirm, check the dataset settings in your workspace for labels like Linked dataset, Source dataset, or Linked from <workspace>, which indicate the dataset is read-only. Also, ensure your workspace role is Admin, Member, or Contributor, as users with Viewer access cannot modify models. Additionally, verify the dataset’s storage or connection mode, since models using live connections or restricted DirectQuery modes may also prevent table edits in the service.

If you have any further questions, please let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

  • Since you copied the semantic model using Semantic Link Labs, the behavior might differ because:

The copy may have preserved metadata that designates the model as Direct Lake, or modeled in a way that restricts editing.

Permissions might have changed on the lakehouse or workspace: maybe you no longer have write access to required objects.

The model might now be considered read-only (or locked) by the system or the semantic link process.

The model’s storage or underlying table types could differ (import / dual / direct query), and if it’s Direct Lake, certain editing operations are not allowed.

What You Can Do to Fix / Work Around

Check the Mode of the Semantic Model

See if it’s Direct Lake. If yes, verify which limitations apply.

If you need calculated tables / columns, consider converting to a mode that supports that (Import or Dual).

    Ensure Permissions

Confirm you have write access on the lakehouse / warehouse / source tables.

Make sure workspace roles are sufficient.

    Select a Single Table First

Before trying “Edit Tables”, click a single table in the model and then see if “Edit tables” becomes enabled. Microsoft documentation mentions this requirement. Microsoft Learn

Check for Updates in Semantic Link Labs

Review the release notes / GitHub issues to see if there’s a change that affects editing capabilities.

There is at least one issue reported: Unable to update column info via update_column function in Semantic Link Labs. GitHub

    Re-deploy / Modify the Model

If possible, re-copy or recreate the semantic model without mode restrictions.

Use Semantic Link Labs functions/settings to set the model to a mode that allows editing (if supported).
