Dynamically link Hierarchy In Visualization with Hierarchy in Data or Table Pane

Microsoft:

Assume you have created a Hierarchy in the Table Panel. It becomes a container now.

Now, right-click on the table field (Region) and add it to the Hierarchy. Repeat this step for (State). Now drag the hierarchy into the canvas.

-or-

Click on the check box before the Hierarchy name.

When you perform one of these, the visualization panel shows the Hierarchy with Region and state as subcategories.

Remember:

Why am I writing to Microsoft? The Hierarchy in Visualization panel is not linked to the Hierarchy in the table, which is a limitation. I hope the Microsoft Power BI team has yet to fix.

So, what is the result of this? Your hierarchy in the Visualization pane will not automatically update if you add another field, City as a subcategory, to this hierarchy. To reflect the updated Hierarchy in the Visualization panel, you need to delete the Hierarchy in the Visualization Panel with Region and State, and drag the updated Hierarchy containing Region, State, and city fields.

  • what is your question? Do you consider this a bug, or a feature request?

  • It is not a bug, it is an feature enhancement with realtime update. This hierarchy applies to custom hierarchy created by the user not numeric hierarchy created by Power BI based on column, such Category "Date", Subcategory "Year, Quarterly, Monthly, Day"
