Do I need SQL Server installed to run DAX Studio?
No, SQL Server is not needed.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this question. I had the same issue come up when the DAX Studio installer indicated that it needed sql server 2016 adomd.net to proceed. I was able to quickly find this answer here to understand that it was OK to go forward.
It looks like a connector that will get added, but one that I won't ever need to use. Would have been nice to opt out!
