Disable refresh on expand/collapse group

Hi all,

Is there a way to prevent a matrix from refreshing its underlying query everytime a row is expanded or collapsed?  The dataset is driven by a direct query (needs to be near real-time) that takes around 5 seconds to refresh, so it introduces a lot of "lag".  I can't seem to find any information on whether this is possible.
