I'm using Power BI Version: 2.88.1385.0 64-bit (December 2020), running reports that all use Direct Query to SQL Server.
For some of my published reports the Datasets seem to have a "Scheduled refresh" every hour, and even offer options to refresh ever 15min. Other reports have "Scheduled refresh" turned off (but only offer refresh as specific times 8 per day). For the reports where the "Scheduled refresh" is turned off even refreshing the Browser does not force the Report to pull up-do-date data into the Report.
I created all the reports in a similar way and have never actually set up any "Scheduled refresh" one hour or otherwise. I actually thought that the data was being pulled (Refreshed) from the SQL Server each time the report was opened by Direct Query.
Just to clarify I'm not actually trying to get Auto Page Refresh here (I read about that and I don't get offered that option on my repoprt building Visualisations menu). This is something more fundamental, it is seeing the data latest data from the SQL server when I first open the the Power BI report. I am also trying to understand how to make my reports standard, either all pulling directly from the SLQ database or (if that is not possible) setting them all up to refresh the data set every hour.
First, how do I get all my reports on the same footing, with a "Scheduled refresh" every hour?
Second, can I get my reports to use Direct Query to refresh the Dataset (from the SQL database) each time the report is opened, so that doin't have to worry about the settings of the "Scheduled refresh" for each report?
Thanks, Pete
@Anonymous yes in the DQ case it will refresh every hour (depends on what you set in schedule refresh) but it will not refresh report visuals, only dashboard visuals. You need to implement Auto Page Refresh for the report to refresh. Check here about the refresh method and DQ you can see the report visual doesn't refresh when the dataset refreshes.
Here you can learn more about Auto Page Refresh (APR)

@parry2k Thanks for responding to my question. However, I'm still not clear what is going on. My problem relates to Refreshing the dataset (and displaying the latest data) when a user initially opens the report, not Auto Refreshing the page. I thought that was how Direct Query worked, I thought that is what I had set up. Regards, Pete
