I have resolved this issue. After further tinkering, I discovered I could make a datamart connection in the online service, which then allowed me to sync up through desktop.
I almost forgot, I have also used power query and telnet to check ports and both connect correctly with no issues. There are also no data source permissions (current file or global) to remove either. This is literally a new set up for power BI running on the 60 day trial
