Date fields automatically splitting into separate fields

Any time I have a date field it autmatically splits it up into Year, Quarter, Month, Day when I add it to an object. How do I stop this? What happens if I just want the whole date and not 4 separate fields in my table?

In the Fields Panel,  click on the down arrow of the date column you have selected, then select the name of your column instead of the date hierarchy. This will solve your problem.
