Dataset Settings: Gateway Connection and Scheduled Refresh Locked
Hello All,
Summary: looking to turn scheduled refreshes back on without using a Gateway.
Having trouble getting regularly scheduled refreshes back live for critical organizational dataset. This started to occur yesterday after downloading the September Power BI software update, though I am not sure if this is the cause of this error.
To start - all of my data sources stem either from Salesforce reports and Excel files saved in organization's Onedrive location (neither require gateways/nor gave me trouble in the past). Furthermore, I just checked my data source settings, all of my permissions are square, as well.
This leads to my stopping point:
I reached this point, yesterday, and elected to try installing a gateway, as this was seemingly the only route I could take. (Again, all data sources are connected via cloud so not sure why this changed). Though, the gateway requires my computer to be on, which will not work for my refresh schedule/my business' needs. Thus, I am seeking an alternative route, stuck at point where I can't turn on scheduled refreshes without downloading a new gateway, which again will not work. I haven't had trouble in the past with refreshes, though suddenly after updating I've reached a blocker. Manually refreshing/publishing in the meantime. Any help/suggestions with this would be sincerely appreciated!!
Hi Anonymous ,
I checked my refresh of OneDrive, it is normal. I have seen this problem before. At last, I uninstalled the gateway and then re-installed it. You can try this solution.
At the same time, you could check the dataset one more time to make sure it is not a mixed dataset(on-premise and cloud).

Hi, were you able to find a solution? I've used the Salesforce connector but I had some issues with my data. As a workaounrd, maybe you can try to test your connection with a 3rd party connector. I've tried windsor.ai, supermetrics and funnel.io. I stayed with windsor because it is much cheaper so just to let you know other options. In case you wonder, to make the connection first search for the Salesforce connector in the data sources list:
After that, just grant access to your Salesforce account using your credentials, then on preview and destination page you will see a preview of your Salesforce fields:
There just select the fields you need. It is also compatible with custom fields and custom objects, so you'll be able to export them through windsor. Finally, just select PBI as your data destination and finally just copy and paste the url on PBI --> Get Data --> Web --> Paste the url.

Hi there,
I would first check whether Power BI Service is treating this as a mixed dataset, meaning some sources are cloud and at least one source is local or gateway-bound.
Even if the Excel files are stored in OneDrive, check whether they were connected through a cloud OneDrive/SharePoint URL or through a local synced folder path.
I would try:
Check all data source paths in Power BI Desktop.
Reconnect Excel files using OneDrive or SharePoint URLs where possible.
Republish the PBIX.
Check Gateway connection and Data source credentials again in Power BI Service.
If any source still uses a local path, configure a gateway or replace it with a cloud source.
For Salesforce Reports, make sure the Salesforce user has API Enabled permission. Also note that the native Salesforce Reports connector has the frustrating 2,000-row limit.
If you want to simplify the Salesforce part, Power BI Connector for Salesforce by Metrica Software can help:
https://appexchange.salesforce.com/appxListingDetail?listingId=31526f0e-abd8-4cb5-bd1a-3bd56b5c0577It lets you prepare Salesforce data sources inside Salesforce, select objects and fields, apply filters, preview the output, and connect Power BI to a prepared source.
This will not fix locked refresh settings caused by a mixed dataset or gateway issue, but it can make the Salesforce extraction part cleaner.
