Data type change + refresh

Hi all,

Need help with data source type changing.

I have a report that combine 4 different exports (I export each of them and save as CSV comma delimited).

Most of the time when I refresh in BI desktop I get an error of Net amount column not found.

When I look at the source in power bi, the column is showing as number (so no type change) but I still get the error.

Today I went to the data source and manually changed the column of net ammount to $$ (it was general before).

Then it solved the problem.

My questions:

1. What can I do to prevent the data type to changing? Is the fact that the data source a CSV file an issue? Does it make any difference if the file is Excel or CSV?

2. My understanding is that if I dont change the report's layout, I should be able to refresh the report in the app and the updated numbers would show up. But if there is an issue with the data source, the refresh wont succeed. So is not really sustainable to have a report which is totally dependent on me being available to update the report, fix the errors and then republish.

3. Last but not least: After I have fixed the error with the data source (changed the Net column to $$) I expected the refresh in the app to work. I mean, I didnt expect that I had to open the report in BI desktop, refresh and republish. But that's what I had to do.

What am I doing wrong? I am fairly new and have no programming knowledge so please explain as I was 5 years old 🙂

Thanks in advance,

RDO

@rdops , In such case better take it as text, so some clean up like trim and the change data type. All as steps in Data Transformation.

Hi Ami,

I am not sure  I understand your advice? If I change it to text then the calculations dont work?

My problem is that that data type keeps changing as I load new exports and replace the existing data source.
