I have a data model that’s around 4GB in size, and it refreshes smoothly despite its size. The key reason is that there are minimal transformations done within Power BI’s query editor — only basic steps like filtering and column removal. All complex transformations have been pushed back to the source system, which significantly improves performance during refresh.

It’s important to note that both the nature of the transformations and the performance of the data source itself are critical factors when evaluating refresh times. Even large models can refresh efficiently if heavy processing is handled upstream and the Power Query layer is kept lean.

I tried refreshing each table one by one. Some tables are getting refreshed, but the fact table is not refreshing. It stays stuck at 'fact loading' and 'evaluating.' My PBIX file is 1.3 GB and contains a lot of data, which is useful. So what should I do to ensure the data gets refreshed?

  • Hi vikramkashid  - can you check the below dashboard checklist:

1.Refresh one table at a time to find the blocker
2.Open Power Query Editor and step through the queries
    3.Clear and re-enter credentials
    4.Reduce the data volume temporarily
5.If online, check refresh history and gateway status also in services, Go to Workspace > Dataset > Settings > Data Source Credentials reconfigure if reuqire.

    Hope the above points helps.

  • There could be several reasons for this. Are any error messages showing up? If so, what do they say? Also, what are the data sources you're using? How large is the dataset, and how complex are the transformations involved? Are you refresing in Desktop or Service?
