DATESMTD Returning BLANK

I'm having an issue with calculating using DATESMTD, I have followed the Syntax correctly (from the documation) but I'm still getting a blank, 

 

I can get the desired result in table using a relative date slicer but I need this in a measure as I'm using it as part of a calculation Group.

    Anonymous , as you are not using any filter on the page. The last date datesmtd will get the last date of the calendar as end date of MTD. That is the reason it is blank

      Please expound on this. Does it mean we should add a filter? or a slicer?
