Customized tooltip page with conditions and maps

Hi there! I need some help with Power BI.

Here’s my current setup:

Table with Coordinates (Table 1):

lat

long

unique identifier

hotel or beach

xx

xx

2

Hotel

xx

xx

3

Beach

Table with Hotels (Table 2):

unique identifier

number of guests

2

2000

Table with Beaches (Table 3):

unique identifier

beach size

3

100

I’ve created two customized tooltip pages:

- *Beach Tooltip:* Displays the beach size.

- *Hotel Tooltip:* Displays the number of guests.

*Azure Map:*

I’ve plotted the columns from the Coordinates table (Table 1) on the map. For the legend, I’m using the column that indicates whether the location is a hotel or a beach.

*Data Model*

The unique identifier columns are connected as a 1:1 relation.

*The Problem:*

When I hover over a beach, the tooltip works perfectly—it displays the correct information that adjusts dynamically. However, when I hover over a hotel, the tooltip shows the information for a beach instead of the correct hotel details.

Currently, I’ve set the *Hotel or Beach* field as the custom tooltip filter, but it doesn’t seem to resolve the issue.

What changes do I need to make in the Power BI data model or elsewhere to get this working? All the guides I’ve found only explain DAX functionality for displaying individual text, but not for enabling distinct tooltip pages.

  • herminegrangerw Ensure you have two separate tooltip pages created: one for hotels and one for beaches.
Set the page size to Tooltip in the Page Information settings.

    Configure Tooltip Pages:

On each tooltip page, add the relevant visuals and fields. For the Beach Tooltip page, add the beach size field from Table 3. For the Hotel Tooltip page, add the number of guests field from Table 2.

    Set Up Tooltip Filters:

On each tooltip page, add a visual-level filter for the Hotel or Beach field from Table 1.
For the Beach Tooltip page, set the filter to only show when Hotel or Beach is "Beach".
For the Hotel Tooltip page, set the filter to only show when Hotel or Beach is "Hotel".

    Assign Tooltips to the Map:

Go to the Azure Map visual on your main report page.
In the Format pane, find the Tooltip section.
Enable the Tooltip and set the Tooltip Type to Report Page.
Assign the Beach Tooltip page to the Beach category and the Hotel Tooltip page to the Hotel category.

    Ensure Data Model Relationships:

Verify that the relationships between the tables are correctly set up. The unique identifier in Table 1 should have a 1:1 relationship with the unique identifier in both Table 2 and Table 3.

  • Thanks for your reply bhanu_gautam .

I struggle with assigning the tooltips on the maps. I can only assign one report page. Could you maybe elaborate how to assign a tooltip page based on the category?

    many thanks in advance!

      Hi herminegrangerw,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

Power BI currently does not support conditional or dynamic assignment of multiple tooltip pages to a visual based on a category like “Hotel or Beach.” Even though you've applied filters inside the tooltip pages (e.g., only show if type = “Beach”), Power BI still renders the one tooltip page you selected in the visual’s settings and shows it for all data points. This is a platform limitation.

Since you can’t assign different tooltip pages dynamically, the best workaround is to create a single tooltip page that handles both Hotels and Beaches, and then use DAX-based measures or visual filters inside that page to show relevant info based on the category.

I would also take a moment to thank bhanu_gautam, for actively participating in the community forum and for the solutions you’ve been sharing in the community forum. Your contributions make a real difference.
