Creating a live connection into PowerBI Desktop

Hello everyone,

I was looking into creating a live connection through my organizations Power BI Web Application into the Power BI desktop application. I believe I'm on the right track but im not getting any connections into any active reports we have. Do i need to put the reports into a specific location in the website application in order to transfer them to the desktop or am I not looking in the right place?

Thank you for any help!

Hi, @mnewm98

Ensure the dataset you're trying to connect to supports live connections. As mentioned, live connections are supported with datasets in the Power BI service, Azure Analysis Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services.

Make sure you have the necessary permissions to access the dataset. You may need to contact your Power BI administrator to ensure you have been granted access.

If you're connecting to an on-premises SSAS instance, ensure that an on-premises data gateway is properly configured and that you have access to it. For more information on gateways, please see:

Hi @mnewm98 - Live connection works for below connections only .

1. SQL Server analysis service

2. Azure Analysis Service

3. Power BI dataset

and Data is as good as what is refreshed on those datasets.Direct Lake connection is for Fabric Lakehouse and Warehouse semantic Model.

Example: you can navigate to the power bi services and  dedicated workspace where you published your dataet from there you can connect to the dataset is visible

from there you can see the live connection datasets.

from there you can extract the live connection db from power bi services not from other web apps.
