Create SSMS Linked Servers to Microsoft Fabric Warehouse

Hi, we have couple of warehouses created in microsoft fabric environmemt. Per business requirement we supposed to connect to Fabric from On-Prem SSMS through Linked Servers option (so I can leverage cross database join option). I am able to create Linled Servers from On-Prem to SQL Managed instance and access databases successfully however if I try the same approach with Fabric Warehouse but, I am getting the below error. Please help me understanding, is Fabric warehouse supports to SSMS Linkd Servers? can we create Linked Servers to Fabric warehouse/lake host? I was able to establish the connection (supplying connecton string, selecting MFA) successfully. But I wanted to establish the connection using Linked Servers so I can perform cross database queries. Appreciate for help. Krishna.

For provider I am selecting - Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server

For Data Source I am providing Warehouse connection details (which end with .net)

In security tab I have selected all the options and 'Be made usingthis secrity context' providing credentials

Hi @ivamsikrishna - Connecting Microsoft Fabric to SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) via Linked Servers is not natively supported as of now. Microsoft Fabric operates on top of OneLake and uses a different architecture compared to traditional SQL Server environments or SQL Managed Instances.

alternative solutions:

  • Instead of using Linked Servers, you could connect directly from Power BI or Azure Data Factory to the Fabric environment for data processing or querying across multiple datasets.

  • Data Integration Services: Tools like Azure Synapse or Data Factory allow for more seamless integration between different data warehouses, including Fabric, without relying on Linked Servers.

There isn't a direct way to accomplish cross-database queries using Linked Servers between SSMS and Fabric at this moment. For updates, keep an eye on Microsoft Fabric documentation for future developments in this area.
