Hi,
English is not my mother tongue.
Sometimes I am flabberghasted by the courses - as the authors sometimes seem to take them as a means of self-actualization rather than simply take the courses as a tool to get the learning-content across as clearly as possible:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/modules/get-data/8-performance-issues
"All DirectQuery and Dual storage mode data sources must have the back-end server processing abilities to create a direct connection, which means that query folding is an automatic capability that you can use. If all transformations can be reduced to a single Select statement, then query folding can occur."
Does the author of this fine course - in his (or her) infinite wisdom - use the god-given eloqence to rather conspiciously give - in a quite elaborate way - special meaning to the above-mentioned sentence,
instead of simply saying: "If you can connect to a Data Source via DirectQuery or Dual-mode, and all transformations can be reduced to a single Select statement, query folding is possible."
Bye
Michael
Solved! Go to Solution.
You are missing a very important part.
All DirectQuery and Dual storage mode data sources must have the back-end server processing abilities
"must have". Direct Query and Query Folding will do you no good if your data source can't handle the onslaught of queries. What really happens is that Microsoft offloads the query engine work to the upstream system so that the Power BI service can save on resources and the customer (ie you) can pay twice.

You're right. I did not think of that.
