Hello,
I installed DAX Studio and it is showing up as a greyed out option. Do I still need to set up a JSON file for the tool? I saw the article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-external-tools but it really doesn't make too much sense to me given that the icon is already present in BI.
Thanks

Hi @Anonymous ,
Have you installed the lastest version of power bi desktop and the dax studio in https://daxstudio.org/? Based on my test, even if my PBIx doesn't contain anything, I can get into dax studio in external tool:

@Anonymous , have you added some content to pbix file. On the latest version, it should be enabled. It might be disabled for the specific connection type. what is source connection
I don't know the correct term, I apologize.
It is the import model.
I am connecting to SQL Server and am using SQL Statements to pull the data into this PBIX. I can successfully connect and get results when I start up DaxStudio.
If it doesn't matter which way I get to DaxStudio, then I am fine, but if there are other functionalities by having it in the external tool option I'd want that. I just came across DS and haven't had the time to delve too deeply into it yet.
Thanks

I am running the latest version of Dax Studio (2.12.2) and the July 2020 release of Power BI (the August came out two days ago and we tend to let the thing bake for a week before downloading it across the board)
I do see the external tool show up for one of the files, but it's useless in that case as it is a Live Connection PBIX and DAX Studio doesn't work with Live connection PBIX files if I wanted to see query plans and such.
I'll mark yours as the answer but I am just frustrated in not understanding why that one works but when I have an import model I do not get the option to launch it from the PBIX. Mind you I don't know the benefits of launching from within Power BI vs. just launching it.
Thanks. I have a lot of questions on how to use the tool, and how it can help, I'll look at other resources - unless someone has a suggestion on a good site or youtube creator that can walk a beginner on the tool. I've done development and such for decades so I'm not a complete noob 🙂
