Connecting a personal OneDrive to Power BI - HTML Data not expected

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to import files that are stored on my personal OneDrive into Power BI. Previously, I did this through a SharePoint from my university, which worked without any problems by simply connecting the file path via "Web" and then logging into Power BI with the corresponding SharePoint user account.

Now that I have stored the data on OneDrive, there is no longer an option to directly copy the file path in OneDrive. Instead, I open the file stored on OneDrive and view the file path under "Information."

When I try to connect this file path, which looks something like this:

I receive the error message: "The downloaded data is HTML. This is not the expected type. The URL may be incorrect, or you may not have provided the correct login credentials for the server."

Connecting the data through OneDrive is required for a university submission, so it must work, right? I am really struggling here and maybe someone has a solution for me.

Thank you so much!!!

Hi @tim81200,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community forum and Thank you @MFelix and @danextian for your response.

Instead of using the URL from the Information section, you need to get the direct download link for the file. You can do this by right-clicking on the file in OneDrive and selecting Share then clicking on Copy link and make sure the link is set to "Anyone with the link can view" and then copy the link.
Power BI does not support direct integration with OneDrive Personal like it does with OneDrive for Business. You need a Work or School account to connect OneDrive files directly. As a workaround, you can manually download the file, sync it locally, or try using a direct file download link.

Please Accept as solution if this meets your needs and a Kudos would be appreciated.

Regards,
Sahasra.

Hi @tim81200

OneDrive Personal works differently than OneDrive for Business. Please refer to this post: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Power-Query/PowerBI-support-for-OneDrive-Personal-as-data-...
