Connecting PowerPivot Data Model contents to PowerBI

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to create a connection to the contents of a PowerPivot Data model stored in an Excel workbook. The workbook is sent by email everyday and the data model contains few sheets, and I want to read/modify the same data model data inside PowerBI

I've tried to Import it (File> Import>Power Query,PowerPivot, PowerView) but it imports the tables but without the content. As I do not have access to the same data used to create this data model I'm unable to make it work. (It tries to connect to the report creators files, and I do not have access to them)

I've also tried to Get Data > Excel but it only reads the data in the sheets/tables and not the contents of the data model

Any tips / suggestions would be most welcome to help me move forward 🙂

Hi @Anonymous

If the data is in the Data Model (POwer Pivot) then it's store din the Excel file.  So the data in the tables shoudl be imported.

Regards

Phil

Hi Philip,

Would it be possible for you to share a tutorial to show how it would be done ideally? Just incase I am missing some step and doing it wrong as Ive tried many things and the data from the PowerPivot model is not loading in PowerBI? Thank you

Hi @Anonymous

Not sure why PBI imports tables but not their content?  If the tables are in PP then everything should come over to PBI when you import.

Perhaps the best way to tackle this is to have the reports/model created directly in Power BI, rather than Excel.  Then you can just distribute/copy the PBIX file.

regards

Phil

Hi Philip,

Could it be that the files are not on my computer but instead on the local computer of the report creator?

Some of these reports are done outside of my region and unfortunately I am unable to request the report to be rebuilt on PowerBI
