Connecting AWS Athena to PowerBI - Preview is evaluating...

Hi, I successfully conected to our AWS Data Catalog via ODBC using this article:

http://raaviblog.com/how-to-connect-microsoft-power-bi-to-amazon-athena-using-athena-odbc-driver/

I can see the tables listed in the Navigator panel. However once I click one of the tables, it's saying "Preview is evaluating..." and it's stuck there for the past 15 minutes. I got a warning email from Slack telling me that there's been an AWS cost spike alert of a few $. Not sure if this is related to what I'm doing with trying to connect PBI with Athena. Why is it taking so long to preview? Is it trying to determine the schema of the data? But the schema is already there in the Data Catalog. The preview should just be returning a few hundred rows or so. There is a lot of data in that S3 bucket there - several TB's worth. Not sure what the issue is. Thanks.

Hi @freesolo

I can understand your pain. I also face this type of issues some times. So initially, I though it is due to my internet connection, but something was off with AWS. Please try what Amit has suggested above or you can simply load the data and not wait for preview to load. Though it is not showing you preview but you can still see everything under PQ.

Thanks,

Ankit
