Connect to firewalled data source via gateway

Hi folks,

I have the following situation: we have a cloud data source sitting behind a firewall. We extract data via ADF utilizing an Azure VM running the Integration Runtime and having it's public IP whitelisted in the data source. The extracted data is stored in Azure Sql which is then finally queried by Power BI.

Now we want to get rid of ADF and Azure Sql and query the data source directly. The idea was to install the data gateway on the VM which is already whitelisted and use this gateway to set up the data source in the service. This should be a nobrainer and work as expected.

The big question is: how will the authoring with Power BI Desktop work? Is there a way to utilize the gateway in Desktop running on the DEVs machines? Or will the DEVs need to author new datasets directly in the cloud or even on the VM which is white listed?

Thanks for any insights/ ideas on this.

Regards

Mathias

So to answer my own question: no there is no option right now. You would need to white list your local IP in the data sources firewall to work using Power BI Desktop.

@MathiasMÜ Power BI Desktop doesn't have the option to use a gateway, you have to work with the network so that Power BI desktop can access the data source without the gateway.

Hey @parry2k ,

thanks for the reply. Could you be a bit more specific how this would look like? As I said the source is in the cloud, to be more specific an Atlas Mongo DB, hosted by Mongo.
