Connect Power BI service report to Sharepoint file

Hi,

I have a power bi report which I have uploaded into service. In that report I have connected to a sharepoint file that lies on a sharepoint site. While in desktop I have used my organizational credentials to connect, in the service there is not such option. How should I connect to the file in the service?

PS. I tried to connect to the file both using web as well as the sharepoint folder connector but either way I cannot authenticate in the service.

Thanks in advance,
Foteini

Hi @FotFly

This error may depend on the browser you’re using. Generally, we always recommend using Microsoft Edge to browse the Power BI service.

Please make sure that pop-ups are enabled in your browser. If you're not using Microsoft Edge and the error persists after enabling pop-ups, consider switching to Microsoft Edge.

Hope this can help,

Connecting a Power BI service report to a SharePoint file can be a bit tricky, but I can help guide you through it. Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Ensure Data Source Credentials:

    • In the Power BI service, go to the workspace where your report is published.
    • Click on the dataset that your report uses.
    • Select “Settings” and then “Data source credentials”.
    • Here, you should see the SharePoint data source listed. Click on “Edit credentials”.
    • Choose “OAuth2” as the authentication method and sign in with your organizational account.
  2. Using SharePoint Folder Connector:

    • If you used the SharePoint Folder connector in Power BI Desktop, ensure that the URL you used is correct and points to the root of the SharePoint site.
    • In the Power BI service, you might need to re-enter the credentials for the SharePoint Folder data source as mentioned above.
  3. Using Web Connector:

    • If you used the Web connector, make sure the URL points directly to the file.
    • Again, in the Power BI service, go to the dataset settings and update the credentials for the Web data source.
  4. Gateway Configuration:

    • If your SharePoint site is on-premises, you might need to configure an On-premises data gateway. Ensure the gateway is installed and configured correctly.
    • In the Power BI service, go to the dataset settings and map the data source to the configured gateway.
  5. Check Permissions:

    • Ensure that your account has the necessary permissions to access the SharePoint file from the Power BI service.

If you follow these steps and still encounter issues, it might be helpful to check the detailed docu...

Hi,

Thank you for replying.

In the service I try to use the OAuth2 method but I get this error "You need to use SSL (HTTPS) when you use OAuth 2.0 authentication."

I also have ensured that the links point to the correct path (either the file or the folder). On top of that I have ensured that I have access to the file and the site and check my gateway.

Thank you very much. The problem was indeed the browser I was using.
I would never in a million years have guessed that this might be the issue.
