Connect Live SSAS MD

Hi All.

I'm trying to connect to a SSAS MD instance in Power BI desktop, but when i input the server name and select the "Connect Live" option and hit the OK, the opion is automatically changed to "Import Data" (It's like i can't use the connect live option).

Is there any limitation to connect to SSAS MD with power BI?

I'm running SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition and SSAS.

Thanks

    Hi lcampos,

I can reproduce your issue when connecting to Standard edition of SSAS 2014 Multidimensional instance via “Connect live” option in Power BI desktop. However, it is successful when I connect to SSAS 2014 Enterprise MD instance via “Connect live” option in Power BI desktop.

As stated in this blog, it requires an Enterprise or Business Intelligence edition of SQL Server Analysis Services when you connect to SSAS 2012 CU4 (or SSAS 2014) MD instance from Desktop using live connection option. In the previous version of Power BI desktop, you will get the message which looks like below when connecting live Power BI Desktop to a Standard edition of SSAS MD instance. In the latest version of Desktop, it automatically changes “Connect live” to "Import Data" rather than throwing error message based on my test.

“Errors related to feature availability and configuration: The ‘Tabular View’ feature is not included in the ’64 Bit Standard’ edition of Analysis Services.”

In addition, based on charles’s response in this idea, connecting Power BI to MD models works for SQL Server 2016 Standard edition. You should be able to connect to SSAS 2016 Standard MD instance from Desktop using “Connect live”option.

    Thanks,
    Lydia Zhang

lcampos Have you already connected to a different data source in which you imported data, or is this the only connection you are trying to make within the PBIX file?

      Hi Anonymous.
      Thanks for your repply.

      Unfortunately no.

This is my first time using the Power BI and i'm trying to create an example to my manager showing the funcionalities that i'm learning/searching on the internet.

We already have a SSAS Cube deployed with some measures and dimensions and i'm trying to connect into it with the power BI, but the only option that i  can use is the Import

lcampos Have you checked the limitations section on this site about the connection to SSAS MD? Are you using a feature in the MD cube that isn't supported, and thus Power BI is defaulting to import as a result?
