Composite data model: Your file was published, but disconnected Error

Hi Community,

I wanted to create a composite model with two data sources. one is Azure analysis services model and other data source is Microsoft excel. when i publish this as a dataset from power bi desktop, I am getting the below error.

When i clicked Open dataset Settings, i am getting the below errors

Do i need to set up gateway for AAS models also?

If so, the datasets with AAS model alone, works well without any issue.

Any help on this is much appriciated.

@jeroenterheerdt Could you please help us on this issue

The error you're encountering when creating a composite model in Power BI that includes an Azure Analysis Services (AAS) model and a Microsoft Excel data source is related to the data connectivity and publishing process. To resolve this issue, consider the following steps:

  1. Data Source Configuration:

    • Ensure that your Excel file is correctly configured as a data source in Power BI. Make sure you can connect to the Excel file and preview the data without any issues.
  2. Data Load Order:

    • Sometimes, the order in which you load the data can affect the results. Try loading the Excel data first and then the AAS model. Make sure that your relationships and measures are defined correctly to handle the data from both sources.
  3. Gateway Configuration:

    • Yes, you may need to set up a gateway for the AAS model. While Power BI can directly connect to AAS models without a gateway for some scenarios, composite models might require a gateway. Ensure that you have configured a gateway for the AAS model.
  4. Gateway Settings:

    • In the Power BI Service, ensure that the gateway is set up correctly, and the data source for the AAS model is properly configured within the gateway settings. You should see the AAS data source listed in the gateway.
  5. Data Source Permissions:

    • Double-check the permissions for both data sources. Ensure that the user or service account used to connect to the data sources has the necessary permissions to access and refresh the data.
  6. Query Folding:

    • Ensure that your queries in Power BI are optimized for query folding, especially for the AAS model. This will help improve performance and reliability.
  7. Error Details:

    • Examine the error details in the Power BI Desktop's "Query Diagnostics" or "Error" windows. They might provide more specific information about what's causing the issue.
  8. Power BI Updates:

    • Make sure you are using the latest version of Power BI Desktop and the On-premises data gateway, as newer versions often contain bug fixes and improvements related to data source connectivity.
  9. Documentation and Community Support:

    • Check the official Power BI documentation and community forums for any known issues or solutions related to composite models and data source connections.
  10. Contact Support:

    • If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft Power BI support for specific assistance with your problem.

Remember to test these changes in a controlled environment to ensure that they don't negatively impact your existing reports and datasets. Additionally, keep in mind that the specific error messages and solutions may change over time as Power BI evolves, so it's essential to consult the most up-to-date documentation and community resources.
