Composite Model: Build permission needed for end users. Why?

Situation:

  • A Composite report in WorkSpace C
  • The composite report uses a live connection to a dataset in Workspace D (i.e. a dataset in a different workspace)
  • In order to view visuals that use data from that dataset in a different workspace, users must be given build access to that dataset in Workspace D

The above seeminginly became the situation earlier in the year, and I just ran into it again with a new report.

I'm wondering if anyone has any updated info on this. It seems odd, and also screws with security a bit.

Thanks. I understand the users needing read permissions on the underlying dataset.

And typically, that's all that is necessary.  Including when the dataset lives in another Workspacee.

But once it's a Composite model, with a dataset who lives in another workspace - that build permission seems to be needed as well. It's this last part that I don't get / seems like an unintended consequence, not a feature.

    Hi mmace1 ,

Build permission applies to datasets. When you give users Build permission, they can build new content on your dataset, such as reports, dashboards, pinned tiles from Q&A, paginated reports, and Insights Discovery.

Based on this document : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-datasets-across-workspaces

If you create this report in Power BI Desktop based on dataset of power bi service ,  you can publish it to different workspaces, as long as their datasets are in new experience workspaces.

Building a report on top of a dataset in a different workspace requires the new workspace experience at both ends: The report needs to be in a new workspace experience and the dataset needs to be in a new workspace experience.

Please also check that you have Build permission to build new content on the dataset and edit permission to create report in the target workspace.

    Refer to:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-datasets-build-permissions
