With DAX, you can get the same results with multiple approaches. However, how you construct the DAX can affect how the calculation is performed under the cover. Filtering a whole table usually results is worse performance (extra table scans, larger materialized tables, etc.). The SQLBI.com site is a great resource to learn much more.
